As a social media marketer working to build better relationships with your audience, the last thing you want to do is come off as annoying. Not only might this prevent your followers from liking and sharing your posts, but also it might cause them to not follow you at all. This is why it’s important to understand what your audience likes and doesn’t like because a successful social media strategy relies on great content.

To help you better understand what type of content to avoid, Adobe conducted a study about what annoys consumers most on social media. Using this information, we’ve compiled a list of things to avoid. Let’s dig in!

Content that is too wordy.

As people browse through their news feeds, they tend to overlook content that is overly wordy or poorly written. This type of content usually has to be read through a couple of times to understand its message, and by this time, the person has lost interest. Make sure that all of your posts are clear, concise and easy to digest. If you’re not sure how it sounds, ask someone else to read it.

Content that is poorly designed.

Your content should always be visually appealing, as this is your opportunity to capture your audience’s attention. The best photos for social media are original and high in quality. Original photos come straight from your brand and can’t be found anywhere else, giving people a reason to follow your page. However, stock photos can be used in a pinch or when you only need a standard photo. For a cohesive look and feel, use the same filters across all of your photos.

Content that is too personalized.

Some brands cross the line when it comes to personalization. It’s important that your content speaks to your audience, as you want to show them that you understand their wants and needs. But, if you start throwing in information that makes it look like you’re spying on the person, this can get you into hot water. Facebook has received negative press about their lack of privacy, so consumers are already on edge. Bottom line: Don’t be creepy.

Content that has been seen before.

This is an obvious one, but it’s all too common. Brands run out of material to write on, or simply have a few lazy days, and they post stale content. Remember, the more something is posted on your page, the less impact it will have. If you’re running out of good content ideas, it’s time to refresh your social media marketing strategy. Put your own spin on curated content, refresh evergreen content, research industry trends and consider a social media takeover.

What Types of Content Won’t Annoy Your Followers?

Posts should always be clear and concise, written to a specific audience and visually appealing. Some of the most engaging content includes interactive content, visual content, user-generated content and strongly positive content. Here are some great ideas to shake up your social media marketing strategy:

  • Take photos of your workspace
  • Answer a question from a customer
  • Introduce your newest employees
  • Share popular items from your website
  • Share someone else’s content
  • Launch a poll
  • Run a contest or giveaway
  • Interview a customer
  • Share a community event
  • Share a funny picture or quote
  • Tell your story
  • Participate in popular hashtags like #tbt (Throwback Thursday)
